INTERPRETING SCRIPTURE
SESSION ONE
How Should We Interpret the Bible?
Wonders
We are going to start off with some general things about the Bible. Some things will be informational and some inspirational. We need to see the how wonderful, powerful and true the Bible is.
The Bible records words which man has never heard. We find in it many names of things which were divinely given before man appeared. Also recorded are God’s soliloquies, God’s two conversations with Satan, the conversation between Christ and the Devil, and the prayers of Christ in Gethsemane.
The Bible is also a Book of types. Types, like miracles and prophecies, belong exclusively in the Bible. It is as impossible for man to duplicate a Bible type as it is to utter a true prophecy or perform a genuine miracle. The Bible is the only Book of revelation from God. It contains truths which can be revealed only by God, which are fundamental and vital, essential to man’s present and eternal well-being.
The Bible is the only Book on angels. Angels are spoken of so often in the Bible, nearly 300 times, in connection with God and His work that the honest reader can no more deny their existence than he can deny the reality of God and the Holy Spirit.
The Bible is the only authority on evil spirits. In it we find the history of demons, records of their ever-present peril to God’s work, and prophecies concerning their future punishment. Only a God-breathed Book could expose this “kingdom of darkness.”
The Bible is the only Book concerning the Devil. Either we accept the fact of the Devil, or we reject the Holy Scriptures. The Scriptures tell us about- the origin of the Devil, the prominence of the Devil, his location, his occupation, his divinely given names, and his fate.
The Bible bears supernatural fruit. Christianity challenges men of every class and generation to test it in their lives. Its “fruit” is undeniably supernatural.
History abounds with examples of “the power of the gospel” to transform individuals, regardless of their age, color, condition, or environment. Millions have gladly laid down their lives rather than deny their Savior. Christianity has proved that it is not one of the religions of the world; they are all human; it is fully divine.
